01 / IRELANDRegister for the taxes that fit your activity
A sole trader needs a Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) before registering for tax. Revenue explains registration through its online services and the different routes that apply to your circumstances.
Income Tax self-assessment, VAT and employer registrations are separate checks. Consult Revenue’s guidance or your tax professional to determine what your activity requires. EZ@Work does not perform these registrations.
02 / IRELANDVAT has both rates and registration rules
The standard VAT rate is 23%. Revenue also lists reduced rates of 13.5% and 9%, with other treatments for specific supplies. The appropriate treatment depends on the goods or services; the standard rate is not a universal rate for every sale.
Registration depends on whether you are an accountable person and the relevant turnover threshold. Special rules can apply to cross-border activity and services from abroad. Check the current category and threshold with Revenue before making a decision.
03 / IRELANDPay and File brings different tax years together
Revenue’s general deadline is 31 October 2026 to file the 2025 self-assessment return, pay the 2025 balance and pay 2026 preliminary tax.
The deadline extends to 18 November 2026 when you both pay and file through ROS. The extension is conditional; it is not a later date for every taxpayer. Capital Gains Tax has different payment rules.
Check your Revenue position and arrangements with your tax professional. No return is filed or payment made by EZ@Work.
Revenue · Pay and File system ↗04 / IRELANDPreliminary tax is an estimate for the current year
Preliminary tax estimates the Income Tax, PRSI and USC expected for the tax year. Revenue sets minimum-payment methods based on current or previous liabilities, including special conditions for the direct-debit method.
First-year treatment can differ. Ask your tax professional to check the applicable calculation and payment requirement. An income summary in EZ@Work does not calculate preliminary tax.
Revenue · What is preliminary tax? ↗05 / IRELANDKeep the documents behind your figures
Revenue requires business records that support the information in returns and show the accounting process. Its guidance specifies keeping original documents for six years.
Examples include sales invoices, purchase and expense receipts, ledgers and accounting books. You remain responsible for recordkeeping even when an accountant holds records on your behalf.
This is a recordkeeping requirement, not a product storage promise. Recording an expense does not decide whether it is deductible.
